National Wear Red Day is Friday, Feb. 7, across the United States, and thousands of American women will be clad in red that day to help raise awareness of heart disease.

It is the 10th anniversary of the Go Red for Women promotion, and a lot has been accomplished in that time, said Kate Cuellar, the regional director of the American Heart Association in Davenport.

According to Cuellar, there has been a 23 percent increase in awareness that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. Some 34 percent fewer women are dying of heart disease every year. And 330 women fewer per day are dying of the disease.

However, heart disease continues to kill more Americans than all forms of cancer combined.
