In late April 2013, my travels took me to the beautiful resort town of Whistler, BC, which was the site of much of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic games. I was there to speak at the annual meeting of the Canadian Academy of Sports and Exercise Medicine (CASEM). I gave a talk on medical issues in the endurance athlete and also attended meetings on Exercise is Medicine and spoke to folks about our Every Body Walk! campaign.

It was a great meeting and a beautiful spot to be active and enjoy the outdoors. It was also one of the few times in my life I have been able to downhill ski and then go for a nice walk in shorts later the same day. It was definitely spring conditions for skiing, but there was still a lot of snow and some very challenging runs. Every day while I was in Whistler I went for a long walk around Lost Lake, which has a beautiful 5K trail around the lake. It was amazing to be out walking and at the same time watching skiers coming down Blackcomb Peak.

This was a nice transition for me from winter activities into spring and summer ones. I am always excited for the longer days and warmer weather of summer that are so conducive to walking. But the beautiful thing about walking is that you can do it most anywhere, no matter what the location or weather. Shopping malls are always a great alternative if the weather is too cold, wet or hot.

So I hope this post finds you well and getting ready for the summer walking season!

Thanks for reading and keep walking my friends!
