In early May 2015, my travels took me to Hawaii and the beautiful island of Maui for the Primary Care Maui Conference. This is a wonderful meeting I organize each year to provide continuing education to doctors about caring for active and athletic patients. My goal each year is to bring in physician speakers with expertise in this area to provide cutting edge information that the doctors who attend can immediately use in their practice. I believe the theme is keenly important, since all physicians should have a primary focus on making sure their patients are physically active. Without this, we know that both quality and quantity of life can quickly diminish.
This year’s speakers included Drs. Benjamin Chun, Marc Jaffe, Gordon Matheson, Rob Nied, Aaron Rubin, Stan Shoor and David Sobel. All of the speakers did an excellent job presenting cutting edge information on medical issues that are commonly encountered by active and athletic patients, and that can prevent people from getting the exercise they need to stay healthy. Topics ranged from the risks and benefits of exercise to common musculoskeletal problems to the effect of your mood on health. At the end of the day, I think everyone came away with a new understanding of the importance of physical activity to health and that doctors should have a primary focus on getting and keeping people active.
Of course, while I was in Maui I made sure to get my walking in every day. The conference was held at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Resort in Kaanapali, Maui. My favorite thing about this resort is its proximity to a wonderful walking path that runs for miles along the coast and allows the opportunity to take in spectacular ocean views as you walk. It certainly ranks among the best walking spots I have ever enjoyed. In addition, there are also endless areas for great hiking in Maui. My favorite is the Twin Falls trail in Haiku, where you literally head up stream by swimming, hopping from rock to rock and scaling cliffs and waterfalls. The payoff is getting great views of the forest and the many water falls. What a great way to make exercise fun!
I hope you are having fun with your exercise and getting in the amount you need to stay healthy.
Keep on walking!
