The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is the national, not-for-profit organization that represents local, state and regional parks and recreation agencies in the United States, along with park users and advocates. NRPA’s mission is to advance park, recreation, and conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people. Through its vast network of 105,000 parks managed by 12,000 parks and recreation agencies, NRPA is committed to enhancing the quality of life for all people through diverse national partnerships and quality programs.
NRPA’s members touch the lives of more than 300 million people in rural communities, suburban neighborhoods, and urban centers. Founded in 1965 through a merger of five national organizations dedicated to the same cause, NRPA serves the needs of citizens, communities, and professionals through a variety of programs and services which is encompassed in three pillars: conservation, health and wellness, and social equity. These core values, which make up the fabric of NRPA, are crucial to improving the quality of life for Americans—by inspiring the protection of natural resources, increasing opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating, and empowering citizens to reclaim their neighborhoods.
Through networks of professionals, citizens, and student members, NRPA serves a wide distribution of the population, including communities with limited access to health resources, high levels of poverty, and high rates of chronic disease. NRPA is committed to helping communities promote park and recreation programs that will lead to an increase in physical activity and healthy lifestyles, while also promoting community livability.
