Three youth advocates of walkability speak about their desire to make their communities more walkable and the changes they’ve helped make thus far. MariaJose Diaz of California WALKS has been working for 7 years to try to make her community more walkable. It all started when her mom joined a walking group. Zelia Gonzales of The Met, Sacramento High School became an advocate of walkabiltiy when she was diagnosed with muscular neuropathy, which severely limited her abilities, making it difficult to walk to school and drawing her attention to the limitations and safety hazards of her community’s sidewalks. Chris Chavez of California WALKS got interested in making his community more walkable as a result of the difficult conditions he faces walking to school and sports pratice.
The Every Body Walk! 2013 Walking Summit, held October 1–3, 2013 brought together Every Body Walk! partners, nonprofit, civic, and business leaders along with new allies, who shared news, views, and ideas to boost the prevalence of walking and increase community walkability. Join national and local leaders to engage in inspiring conversations and sessions that will build capacity, develop strategies, increase momentum and showcase best practices to increase investments in walking and walkability. The Walking Summit also focused on how to integrate walking and physical activity into a conference format.
