National Get Outdoors Day on Saturday offers free access to 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands.
Local hikers and outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the day by trekking to the waterfalls at Chantry Flat above Sierra Madre or tackling a tough climb up Mt. Baldy or other high points in the Baldy area — without having to buy or display an Adventure Pass.
President Obama recently declared June Great Outdoors Month and urged Americans to “uphold our nation’s legacy of conserving our lands and waters for future generations.”
National Get Outdoors Day started in 2008 and has been linked to First Lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign in children called Let’s Move Outside.
Details: Note the fee-free day doesn’t apply to National Park Service parklands. And in the San Bernardino National Forest, the Adventure Pass will still be required at the Santa Ynez Recreation Area on Saturday.
