In early July 2016, my travels took me to Indianapolis and the headquarters of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to help plan next year’s ACSM annual meeting and World Congress on Exercise is Medicine. I am honored to again serve on the planning committee for this meeting and in my last blog I talked in detail about this year’s great ACSM meeting that was held just last month in Boston. That meeting was a huge success and drew a record attendance of nearly 7,000 people from around the world, who represent many of the top experts in the field of sports medicine and exercise science, including our US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. I am already getting excited about next year’s meeting, which will be held in Denver, Colorado during the first week of June 2017.
The 2017 ACSM Annual Meeting will be chaired by my good friend Dr. Walt Thompson, who is President-elect of ACSM and a Professor at Georgia State University. Our planning meeting lasted for a day and a half, and included 20 or so sports medicine and exercise science colleagues who came together as a committee to plan next year’s meeting. We were tasked with reading through hundreds of clinical and scientific submissions from around the world that will make up next year’s meeting. This was not an easy task, since there were many great sessions submitted that we had to turn down due to limited space on the program. In the end, we selected some great submissions that will serve as the foundation for next year’s meeting. This same group will meet again in January to add some content and put the finishing touches on the final program before it is held May 30th thru June 3rd, 2017 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.
Of course, while I was in Indy I made sure to get out and walk every day. Indy is a great town that is very walkable and has the feel of a small town, but with big city amenities. I particularly enjoy walking along the numerous canals that run thru downtown. In fact, the ACSM headquarters sit right alongside a beautiful canal with prominent sidewalks on either side that are perfect for a nice stroll.
I hope this blog finds you well and you are doing the walking you need to stay healthy. Keep walking my friends!
