Walking outdoors holds many surprises, not the least of them discovering the magical sides of nature all around us. Located on the Pacific Flyway, the Ormond Beach Bird Refuge hosts migratory birds from as far as South America and Alaska and birdwatchers from all over the country come to witness this year-round spectacle.
Instead of slipping into retirement quietly, Walter Fuller, the official volunteer and steward at Oxnard’s Ormond Beach has made this nature preserve the center of his life. Up at dawn every day with camera and binoculars he patrols the refuge for rare sightings and assists visitors with expert knowledge all day long. Ormond Beach fulfills a quest for birders and nature lovers alike, and thanks in part to the steadfast stewardship of Walter Fuller, this rare patch of coast will remain open to all who seek it.
