Congress created ODPHP in 1976 to lead disease prevention and health promotion efforts in the United States. ODPHP is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health.
ODPHP mission is to provide national leadership in disease prevention and health promotion by:
- Creating national health goals and objectives
- Coordinating HHS preventive health services and health education activities
- Supporting public and private programs that improve the health of Americans
