The American Volkssport Association (AVA) serves as an umbrella organization for a grass roots network of about 300 chartered nonprofit sports clubs that conduct some 3,000 events in the 50 states. Fifty thousand individuals participate each year.

Founded in 1976, AVA is America’s premier noncompetitive sports organization. We are a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that promotes family oriented sporting events that encourage fun, fitness and friendship for people of all ages and abilities.

Volkssporting originated in southern Germany in response to a need for outdoor activity for all ages, free from competition. Translated from German, it means “the sport of the people.” The hallmark of volkssporting is to promote personal physical fitness by providing opportunities for fun-filled, safe exercise in a stress free environment.

Volkssporting offers noncompeitive walks, cycling, swimming, roller skating, and in some areas cross country snow skiing and snowshoeing. Walking is the most popular activity. Meet friends, navigate scenic trails, and improve your physical and mental health. You enjoy your journey at your own pace.

Events sponsored by local clubs are availalbe in every state in the U.S. and in 28 countries worldwide. If you are looking for a club or event in a particular area, go to our website www.ava.org and click the link “Locate Walking Clubs.”

Local chartered clubs nationwide work with youth groups such as the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, church groups, etc. to organize walking events. There is a small fee to participate. Click the website link “Special Programs” for further information.

The AVA is run by an elected volunteer National Executive Council consisting of a President, vice Presdient, Sectretary, Treasurer and ten Regional Directors. There is a paid staff with 6 individuals.

Its national headquarters is located at 1001 Pat Booker Road, Suite 101, Universal City, Texas, 78148. Telephone (210) 659-2112 or [email protected].
